After my success with Beta Exam 71-510: TS: Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server I now find myself thinking that I should get my developer exams sorted. I had never done them before as I would have had to pay for them myself. Which sucks...

The company I am now working for (the first to have more than 30 employees, and has more than 70,000) has kindly decided that I get a training budget. Now, though the budget is large, it would only cover one and a half of the exam courses per year and I can't be bothered to take 4 years to do it, by which time they will be obsolete anyway, so I have decided to go for the self study approach.

I am studying for my Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) of the MCPD: Enterprise Applications Developer flavor. As I have no previous MCP experience I will need to do five exams:

  • Exam 70–536: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Application Development Foundation
  • Exam 70–526: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Windows-Based Client Development
  • Exam 70–528: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Web-Based Client Development
  • Exam 70–529: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Distributed Application Development
  • Exam 70–549: PRO: Designing and Developing Enterprise Applications by Using the Microsoft .NET Framework

So I am starting at the bottom and working my way up. First is exam 70-536, the problem is that I have been doing .NET development for 6 years and .NET 2.0 for 2 of those. This means that 80% of things I know already which makes the books rather boring!

Ah well, back to the book!

An excelent resource for 71-510 can be found on the dotnetfun site @ .

Why complain that you already know 80% of the material? Surely that's an advantage and means you should be able to pass the exam with much less study?

If you know 80% of the material already why even study?

It's the pass mark for the exam.

Read the self study books from the MS press. They come with practice tests on the included cd. (Also includes 90 day VS 05). The included practice tests (in my opinion) a harder than the actual tests, but that prepares you all the more. I didn't have the last book for 70-549 (MCPD:EAD) so I purchased practice tests from TestKing,MeasureUp, and Self-Test.....BIG MISTAKE. I was acing those (97-100% each time) and FAILED the exam. I now have the book and am reading and using the included practice tests. The practice tests are powered by MeasureUp, but are not like the practice exams I bought from MeasureUp. Having seen the beast up close, the exams with the book are the closest to the real thing. The book also has a discount code of 15% to use towards your exam fee.

Good luck all,
Peter

There is also a free resource on wikibooks, a sister project of wikipedia at http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Microsoft_Certified_Technology_Specialist/Exam_70-536 you may want to take a lot and add any important notes you have while studying the exam or after passing it.

Good luck
Jacques

My advice to those who think they know 80% of any certification: you will be sadly humbled if you don't study, and study hard.

I've taken several certs, in spite of several years of experience with any given technologies, you will still be drilled on questions you would normally google on.

So, did you study? Did you pass? what are you taking now?
